So this movie is a thriller/action/adventure/horror (somewhat)/romance movie. Yes, it does incorporate aspects from a lot of different genres, but is it really worth it? At some points it is, but then others, not so much. Though produced by Award winner J.J. Abrams, it barely lives up to the expectations that it should. The movie is edited in a cinema verite style where it looks as if the whole movie is through a normal everyday handicam. I personally think that this is the main problem of the movie. The effect, though original, is very hard to watch and confuses the watcher. This also affects the lighting of the movie. When there's a spot that's slightly darker than others, you can't see anything. Yeah, you see it as if you would have seen it through a normal camera. This not only makes the movie very tedious to watch, but it also kills the point of the suspenseful shots because even when something DOES jump on you, it's hard to tell what jumped because you can't even see it. Then add all this to the fact that most of the movie was a group of people, including the main character with the hand held camcorder, running and jumping around while a giant monsters attacking them. What does this equal? A very queasy and confusing movie.
Moving on from the bad shooting/editing methods. The acting of the movie is mediocre, to say the least. Actually, it's even been stated that the actors were unprofessional due to the fact that the movie was mainly pre/produced in secret, with no scripts sent out to the candidate actors. I understand J.J. Abrams wanting to keep such a original, new movie a secret, but in the end, did his idea really make it better? Not exactly. It just made the acting weak. There's barely any real talking through out the movie anyways. Maybe partially the beginning and some small talks, but besides that it's just random shouting and screaming, which they were pretty good at I guess.
Besides all these negative points of the movie, there are, of course, some positive ones. The plot of the movie is really romantic. A prospering relationship is ruined the night of the main character's departure to Japan. After they have an argument, the girl leaves, heartbroken. Later in the movie, the guy gets a call that the girl's hurt and sets out to find her, with the help of his friends. In the end, everyone dies except the couple. They sit under a bridge, waiting to be excavated, but by then it was time for the whole city to be bombed in order to kill the monster, Clover. In the end, the two die in each other's arm and the film cuts to an old scene in the camera where the couple's having a lovely day at the fair where the girl says, "Today was a good day." This leads to the irony/ the tragedy of the whole movie. Sorry if this paragraph was so confusing.
So all in all, the movie's alright. The plot, the main positive factor, is really good and leads to a good movie. But then the acting and editing ruin the greatness of the movie. On a scale of 10, I'd rate it a 5-6 maybe. It's an alright movie to watch with a loved one to just be in each other's arms, but then again, what movie ISN'T a good movie to watch when all you're doing is cuddling and kissing? So if you really want to see the Americanized Godzilla, I recommend this. But don't expect a whole lot out of it like I did and definitely don't buy it: rent it or borrow from a friend! =]
